We’ve structured our new courses so that members can (1) get certified to produce programming at our facility in less time, (2) collaborate on projects and (3) build a community of trained crew members for your future productions.

DCTV Class Structure

Level 1 Courses (L1) are mandatory for using DCTV facilities or equipment.

Level 2 Courses (L2) are optional

Level 3 Courses (L3) are advanced.

DCTV 101
It is important that all individuals seeking access to any DCTV facilities (channel time, equipment use) appreciate the history of public access television and DCTV.  Understanding DCTV’s policies, procedures and culture are essential for a successful and mutually beneficial relationship between the community and DCTV. Students who successfully complete the DCTV Orientation will be allowed to request channel time for completed programs.

PRODUCING
Producing is the organized creative vision that drives the production process. So before you can create a television program, you must first understand production terms, techniques, scriptwriting, scheduling crew and talent, shot composition, interviewing, the difference between field and studio production, edit preparation, and all the necessary paperwork involved. Students who successfully complete Producing will be allowed to reserve field production equipment and DCTV studios, with the help of DCTV certified technicians.

 Fee: $100/$120
Prerequisite: DCTV 101


8 weeks: 5 classes, 1 field production, 1 studio production, 2 edit sessions

Certification: In order to become certified as a DCTV Producer, student must produce a class project, in accordance with a plan they develop, organizing and integrating both of field and studio segments, and pass a written test.

STUDIO TECHNICIAN
Students receive hands on training of all studio and control room positions and equipment (audio, switcher, character generator, teleprompter, floor director, studio cameras, directing, lighting and set design).  After rotating through all areas, students must demonstrate proficiency in each area during a project and scheduled class project and mock productions during class time.

Fee: $60/$80
Prerequisite: Producing

FIELD TECHNICIAN
Students receive hands on training of field production techniques (camera, audio, lighting), and will shoot a field project with a student producer from the Field and Studio Producing class. Student will have the opportunity to see how their footage was edited when they attend final critique class.

BASIC FINAL CUT PRO EDITING
Learn the basics of non-linear editing by understanding editing theory and learning practical applications.  Students will capture footage working from edit decision lists, apply transitions and music, create text and put projects on tape. Students will practice using pre-shot footage, and will also edit student projects that will air on DCTV.

Fee: $85/$105
Prerequisite: Producing

DCTV 101 is the required orientation class for new members at DCTV who would like to take classes and/or submit programming.

Effective immediately, all producers are required to submit a list of crew volunteers, scripts and rundowns for your show at least 7 days prior to the production. The list should be submitted to a production staff member for evaluation.

Schedule your shoot at least 3 weeks in advance for plenty of planning and recruiting time, and to make any necessary changes. You are permitted to reschedule or cancel your shoot 1 week prior to the scheduled shoot date for a refund.

AMENDMENTS TO THE DCTV PRODUCER'S MANUAL: OPERATING RULES AND PROCEDURES as of 5/17/10:

Amend to add this new Section:

975.10 Members that are suspended as a result of a major or serious violation forfeit all member privileges and at DCTV's discretion, shall refrain from entering the facility during the suspension period. If this type of suspension applies, members are not allowed to serve as a guest on any program produced at DCTV nor can they access any "member" only section of the web site during the suspension period.

Amend to add this to Section:

975.6 Members that are charged with a major or serious violation that threatened the safety of staff and other members will be suspended immediately and will not be allowed to return to DCTV's premises during the suspension period.

 

A. Due to the increased number of programs being aired, program submissions must be submitted no later than the 1st of each month for your program to air the following month.

B. For every program submitted, producers MUST include the episode name and/or episode number on the program submission forms and encoded files.

Programs without this information will not be scheduled to air.
